Swissport is celebrating two finalists in the Australian Workplace Health & Safety Awards (AWHSA) to be announced in a virtual ceremony next week.
Annabel Limmer, a Customer Service Supervisor from Perth, has been recognised in the Emergency First-Aid Response category for efforts in resuscitating an airline guest experiencing cardiac arrest. After noticing a guest looking distressed and unwell and collapsing to the ground, Annabel performed CPR until medical staff arrived. The guest went on to have bypass surgery and thanked Annabel for helping save his life.
Swissport’s trial of the SoterSpine wearable technology device is a finalist for Best Enterprise Safety Program Initiative. The device, designed by Soter Analytics, materially and proactively reduces musculoskeletal injuries in the workplace. If engaging in awkward postures, it gives the wearer a vibration or sound alert. The device is synchronised daily to the wearer’s smartphone, which analyses data on their movements, and depending on the types of movements they are making, personalised content is delivered to train the wearer on how to reduce their risk. With SoterSpine, Swissport can collect movement data and analyse patterns and areas of risk.
Soter Analytics nominated Swissport for the award, recognising the company’s culture of continual improvement and interest in using technology, systems and data to improve safety.
The SoterSpine trial commenced in May 2019 with Swissport teams at Melbourne Airport and has since been expanded to several more locations across Australia.
In 2020, the AWHSA will recognise the achievements in Workplace Health & Safety across 10 award categories:
- Best Safety Program Initiative Award

- Young Safety Professional of the Year Award
- Health & Safety Innovation Award – SME
